This particular combination of tropes - pretend boyfriend + gay for you - has been done to death for sure. But there is a reason tropes become tropes, and that is because they speak to something in us. When they are done is a way that is fresh and charming, it is satisfying - the comfort food of reading.
Another observation: some of my favorite books lately have been self published. Many of the best sellers at Amazon, too. At least a subgroup of self-published authors seem to have figured out how to do this right.
